Use Outlook's AI to Summarize Regulatory Update Emails
What This Does
Outlook's Copilot summarizes lengthy regulatory alert emails, law firm client alerts, and agency notices into the key points you actually need to act on — cutting daily inbox review from 45 minutes to 10 minutes.
Before You Start
- You have Microsoft 365 with Copilot enabled
- You're using the desktop or web version of Outlook (not legacy Outlook)
Steps
1. Open the regulatory email
Click on a regulatory update email — law firm alert, agency notice, or compliance newsletter — that you need to review.
2. Use the Summarize button
At the top of the email, click the Copilot icon or look for "Summary by Copilot" which often appears automatically at the top of long emails.
3. Read the AI summary
Copilot generates a 3–5 bullet summary of the email's key points. For regulatory alerts, it will identify: what changed, who is affected, and when it's effective.
4. Ask a follow-up question
In the Copilot panel, type: "What specific actions does this require for a [community bank / credit union / broker-dealer]?" or "What is the effective date and deadline for compliance?"
5. Draft a response or forward
If you need to forward with context to a business line, click Draft a reply in Copilot and describe what you want to communicate: "Draft a reply to Sarah explaining that this regulation affects our home equity loan process starting [date] and asking her to schedule a meeting to discuss."
Real Example
Scenario: A 12-page law firm client alert about CFPB updates to the mortgage servicing rules arrives in your inbox.
What you do: Open the email → click Copilot summary → read the 4-bullet summary identifying the 3 key changes and their effective dates → ask "Which of these changes affects our escrow administration process?" → get a specific answer in seconds.
What you get: Inbox processed in 3 minutes instead of 30. Key compliance dates captured without reading the full document.
Tips
- Use Copilot to draft a follow-up calendar reminder after reading a regulatory alert: "Draft an email to myself with a reminder to update our HELOC policy by [effective date]"
- For agency guidance documents (not just emails), use Copilot to compose an email to your team summarizing what the guidance means for your institution
- Copilot works on email threads too — click into a long thread and ask "Summarize this thread and tell me what decisions were made"
